It is true that there is no substitute to
hard-work and no task succeeds without
commitment & dedication. These lines are
totally applicable on the life story of S.
Avtar Singh Bharaj. He belongs to such poor
family that it was difficult to make both
ends meet. But his mother had a vision that
study is the back bone of all success, so
she continued to motivate Avtar for higher
education. Either his father was of old
thought that we have to generate our
livelihood first rather than spending time
and money on education (as people says too
kehra parh ke DC lag janna, Kam sikh lay
kam ayuga). " |

Following his
mother’s advise S. Avtar Singh Bharaj is now on the covet post of
G.M Gurdaspur co-operative Sugar Mill. S. Avtar Singh Bharaj was
born to Smt Surjit Kaur on 1st June 1957 in village "KOLIAN" Tehsil
Mukarian, Distt Hoshiarpur. His father S. Ram Singh Bharaj reared
up the family with immense hardship by remaining always away from
home and labouring hard on daily basis. To feed seven member of the
house.
Avtar
completed his Primary education from the village School while
sitting on wrags on floor . His father was reluctant to continue his studies
due to acute financial
crisis. But his mother staunchly believed that no one can actually
rise in life without education. So she get him
admitted in sixth class in Khalsa High School Mukerian, He had
to cover eight K.Ms daily onfoot. There was a canal colony adjoining
the school in which officers of the Canal Deptt. resided. He always think that
who are these people who live in these houses and enjoy comfortable
life. After knowing, he made up his mind and fallowed the advise of
his mother to do hard work, obtain higher
degree and become an officer like them in life. During school,
it was very difficult to get even a pajama and shirt stitched due to
economic hardships, so he joined the N.C.C. wing of the school to
fulfil the cloth-requirement as N.C.C. cadets in the school were provided uniforms.
Avtar cleared his matriculation in 1973 with
Ist Division and stood first in the school by studying very hard to
fulfill his dream. This all-round appreciation ignited the flame
within him for further studies. S. Avtar Singh got first division
while studied with light of
the Kerosine-lamp as there was no electricity facility in the
village till then.

After scoring good marks in Matriculation, he motivated
his parents for admitting him in an I.T.I. to acquire
some technical skill. so he filled up admission forms
for I.T.I. Talwara as well as Pathankot for learning
stenography. Both the I.T.Is called him for admission by
virtue of meritorious performance in Matriculation but
the Almighty had some different plans for him., He had
to submit his tenth class certificates to seek admission
in I.T.I. Normally, School Headmaster attests the
photocopies of the original certificates but on that day
headmaster was not available to attest the copies., the
clerk of the school advised him to get the photocopies
attested from the Principal of the S.P.N.College. the
college had got established in Mukerian in 1973 in which
classes of Commerce and Arts had also started. So Avtar
went to the Principal for getting the photocopies of the
original certificates attested. When the Principal of
the College looked at the Detail-Marks-Sheet, he
analysed that he was truly deserving student to receive
higher education and asked him the reason as to why he
was seeking admission in I.T.I. despite the fact that he
had secured such high percentage in Matriculation. Avtar
explained about financial position. On hearing
this, the Principal kept his original certificates with
him and called his father.
His father explained his helplessness. But the Principal, being a good human
being, assured that college would provide free in leo of his meritorious performance in
Matriculation and also provide books from the
college-Library. The Principal also promised that he
would arrange employment after completion of my
studies. Finally, his father convinced and agreed
for admission. To cope up the day today expenses and
desire to achieve the goal he started to help his
father in his work. Avtar cleared his graduation in Commerce
in Ist Division. The Principal fulfilled his
assurances and He joined Talwara-Dam.
Avtar
believes that time once lost can not be regained and
hard work of today shall yield all the comforts of life
tomorrow. He got a suitable job in Deptt.of Civil
Supplies Corporation which He did for over a period of
six to seven years. He got another higher job in Sugarfed, Punjab, as Asstt. Accounts Officer, after a

an all-round development in the family. She is lady who
